Bit Defender – BitDefender Antivirus Software

BitDefender Antivirus and Total Security
Bit Defender states that it is “the creator of one of the industry’s fastest and most effective lines of internationally certified security software” (Bit Defender, 2009). Their product does not feature a free virus removal tool or a free antivirus but there is a trial period of 30 days. To keep using it after that term is up, you must buy the software. BitDefender offers several products, their line is actually quite comprehensive in what they are and do. Their cheapest option is to purchase Antivirus 2009 for $29.95. This subscription is good for three computers and is renewable thereafter. The second purchase option is for their Internet Security package, this is probably what the company is a little more renown for as it’s a very verbose firewall, and this product is available for $39.95. Finally, they offer a total security package, which is a conglomeration of the Antivirus and Internet Security packages. The total security package protects your computers from all threats, local and remote for a purchase price of $79.95 per year for three computers.

Bit Defender in a lot of areas is miles ahead of its competition. The footprint of a BitDefender install is much smaller than that of other antivirus programs of comparable features. Searching around the internet, I had trouble finding bad things to write about Bit Defender, so I’ll write more good things. BitDefender (Corporate) runs on both Windows and Linux platforms effectively. The Linux installs are more geared toward mail servers, NFS servers, and Samba (Windows Share) servers.  Mandriva has certified it to run on their servers. Additionally, Bit Defender supports mobile platforms, the BitDefender Mobile Security v2 runs on the Symbian and Windows platforms.

Bit Defender has a lot of really nice features. The user interface is clean and intuitive, the program runs smoothly and, it doesn’t hog memory like some of the other large antivirus suites. Like most other antivirus suites, BitDefender has the ability to scan live instant messages, e-mail, websites, and programs you’re trying to run for viruses and malware, in real time. The program protects the computer against new threats by using a experience based tracking where the software watches for processes and actions which are viral or spyware in nature, it then acts upon those findings bu warning the user and allowing the user to quarantine the file(s). Bit Defender allows the user to configure some options for allowing the software to have more of a role in the user’s online identity. BitDefender actively seeks out and protects the user from e-mail “phishing” schemes and allows the user to encrypt his or her instant messaging traffic using advanced encryption techniques.

The creators of Bit Defender have truly thought about the user experience. It’s plain to see through the intuitive interface and the features the program contains. BitDefender truly works to defend every bit of information on your computer by actively seeking out and thwarting attacks against your computer and you as a person. Though it is a shame they don’t offer a free antivirus like many of the other antivirus companies out there.  Overall, I found Bit Defender to be one of the best I tested, and would recommend it any day.
