Avira Antivir – Avira Antivirus
When I first opened the Avira Antivir website, I was afraid I had spelled the name wrong. The name itself appears to be fashioned using “a” to denote the lacking of a “vira” or virus. It’s medicinal sounding in nature, so I would expect this program to be like a flu shot for my Windows based computer. Avira AntiVir comes in three versions, there is the Free Antivirus version, which they call Avira AntiVir Personal, and then there’s the “for sale” section with Avira AntiVir Premium and Avira AntiVir Security Suite. The security suite primarily adds both a firewall and parental controls to the mix. The costs of Premium and Security Suite are 19.95€ (euros) or about $28 USD and 39.95€ or about $55 USD respectively.
Avira Antivir Personal offers free virus removal for the masses; the program successfully removed a couple viruses from my test computer without too much trouble. Avira Antivir is comprehensive and the installer for the Personal version is around 31Mb. The program features automatic updating, real time virus monitoring, a vast database of viruses, trojan horses, and other security anomalies. The program also features a scheduler. Avira Antivir is also targeting the netbook users, their interface, antivirus and anti-spyware engines are automatically tuned for the low power processors and low resolution netbook screens.
In tribute to Avira Antivir’s success, many independent testing labs have found the same sort of results that I have (this is a good program). The PCSL test in May 2009 awarded Avira Antivir five of five stars for their program’s completeness and effectiveness, also in May of 2009, AV Comparatives granted Avira Antivir it’s seal of “Advanced ++”, additionally, it’s fully Vista capable. Avira Antivir must find it hard to continually improve on their software, but their latest version does include some new options. E-mail scanning is a configurable option rather than a mandatory requirement and the virus/spyware sweeps can be configured more uniquely to the user’s preference.
In closing, Avira Antivir’s Personal edition is a very nice and well rounded antivirus and antispyware solution. It is very customizable and very good at protecting the system. The program’s rewritten engine is fast and efficient. Avira Antivir doesn’t bog down computers like some other free antivirus software or free virus protection packages. I know this review is geared toward the private (home) edition, but I found it nice that the program is fully compatible with SAP, which is an enterprise application. All in all, I have found Avira Antivir very stable and it’s very nice to use.
