Creating a Password – Windows XP/Windows Vista
Have you ever been sitting at your computer checking your bank account and wondered, “Can anyone else see this?” Well it honestly is a possibility that someone else is sitting there watching your every move, which I guess means I am technically getting more viewers than google analytics tells me! Being an ethical hacker, I have a great deal of experience in figuring out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to securing your computer. The number one thing that allows someone to get into your computer is having a weak password or not having a password at all! In the following, I will explain the reasons you should have a password and how to add a password. Stay tuned until tomorrow and I’ll reveal the secrets to making a great password that hackers don’t want you to know.
To start off, why do you feel you should have a password? Is it because without one anyone can sit down and access your computer? How about the fact that anyone can get into your computer and run around unstopped? If not those two, how about the fact that if you are on the administrator account without a password programs and viruses can easily be installed and make fatal changes to your computer? I think all 3 of those are pretty important and not something I would enjoy happening to me. Don’t panic though, simply having a password will make all 3 of these issues much harder for a hacker to achieve but, if you don’t know how to add a password that’s no help. Next, I’ll explain how to add a password on a Windows operating system (XP and Vista).
Fortunately, adding a password on a Windows XP or Vista system is not difficult at all. First, I would like to explain a symbol I will be using. I will be using the symbol >> a number of times to mean move the mouse to a certain place in your navigation. So let’s get started.
- Go to Start >> Settings and click on Control Panel.
- Once in Control Panel, look on the left.
- You should see a link that says either Switch to Classic View or Switch To Category View. If it says Switch to Classic View click on it. Otherwise , continue.
- Once in classic view, locate the User Accounts icon and double click on it. This will open your User Accounts management screen.
- In the pick an account to change area of the User Accounts window, click on your Windows XP user name. This is the username you use to get onto Windows everyday.
- Choose the Create a password link.
- In the first two text boxes, enter the new password you want to start using. You have to enter it twice so you make sure you put it in correctly. Don’t want to put in the wrong password and lock yourself out.
- Click the Create Password button to confirm your new password.
- The next screen asks Do you want to make your files and folders private?. If other people use your computer under other accounts and you don’t want them to see your stuff… say yes. If you are the only one using the computer or you don’t care if anyone else you’re your files you can choose No.
- Now you can go ahead and close out of everything.
- Next time you start your computer you will have to use this password to log in.
Stay tuned to find out the secrets to making a password that the hackers don’t want you to know!
